There’s a reason why dirty, unkempt toilets are a common sight in horror movies. Aside from looking and smelling disgusting, an unkempt toilet is a hotbed for germs and parasites. Not giving it the cleaning it deserves is literally putting your and your family’s health at risk.

So how do you clean a toilet bowl like a pro? Hiring a first-rate maid service in Baton Rouge is an excellent way to ensure maximum cleanliness, but what if you have guests coming over and you need to deal with your musty toilet bowl ASAP?

Read on to learn how to make sure your toilet is always looking its best.

How do you properly clean a toilet?

Toilets are used multiple times every day, and should be given regular cleanings in order to hinder microbe growth. Luckily, modern toilets are equipped with flushing mechanisms that not only take away our bodily waste, but also give the bowl itself a quick wash.

Sometimes, however, not even repeated flushing can do the trick. When this happens, the stains should be cleaned with a toilet brush. If your bathtub or shower is close to the toilet bowl, you can also wash the stains away by spraying them with water from the showerhead.

Here’s how to clean your toilet bowl:

  • Spray a toilet bowl disinfectant around the edges of the bowl and let it sit for half an hour or so,
  • Flush away the disinfectant and spray the entire bowl with a toilet cleaner of your choice,
  • Wipe down the exterior and the interior of the bowl using a cloth or a napkin,
  • Take extra care to thoroughly wipe down the toilet seat,
  • Clean the bowl with a general purpose cleaner to remove any traces of the cleaning solution.

What causes brown stains in a toilet bowl?

How do you properly clean a toilet Bodily waste and other organic matter isn’t the only stuff that can make your toilet look gross. Sometimes, despite cleaning and disinfecting the toilet bowl regularly, it still develops ugly brown stains that seem immune to regular cleaning products.

These strange stains are called limescale. Limescale is a byproduct of hard water. Hard water is water that has passed through soft soil (such as chalk or limestone) before getting into the plumbing system.

Most of the minerals it had gathered along the way will be stopped by various filters, but some will pass through and reach your faucets, sinks, toilet bowls, etc. There, they form hardened limescale deposits on any surface that comes in regular contact with water.

How do you clean a stained toilet bowl?

As with cleaning glass shower doors, getting limescale off the toilet bowl can be done using a combination of vinegar and water.

Remove limescale from your toilet bowl by:

  • Step #1: Empty a bottle of vinegar into the toilet and let it sit for 3 or 4 hours,
  • Step #2: Carefully scrub the toilet using more white vinegar,
  • Step #3: Flush the toilet to remove any remaining limescale residue,
  • Step #4: If repeating steps 1-3 a few times fails to clear away the limescale, you can use medium grain sandpaper to finish the job.
